SLOWING DOWN THE STOMACH
Ozempic, Wegovy, and similar weightloss shots have become famous almost overnight. People call them “miracle drugs” because many users lose weight fast. But now, a new story is being told. Doctors are seeing more patients with stomach problems, vomiting, and pain. Hospitals are treating people who cannot keep food down. Some say their stomach stopped working the right way.
So what is really happening inside the body? These drugs copy a natural hormone in your gut called GLP-1. This hormone tells your brain, “I am full,” and tells your stomach to slow down. That is the key word: slow. The medicine makes food stay in your stomach much longer than usual. It also makes you feel full faster and longer. That helps people eat less.
But the stomach slows too much and actually stops. Doctors call this “gastroparesis.” That means the stomach is partly paralyzed. When food does not move through the stomach, the body can feel terrible. This causes throwing up for hours, bad stomach pain, bloating and pressure, not being able to eat, constipation that lasts days, and feeling weak and dizzy.
NEWS REPORTS
News stories have started covering the effects of these drugs. It is a warning, really, of the unintended consequences of messing with God’s design for the human body. One national magazine wrote about how thousands of people went to the emergency room with stomach problems linked to weight-loss shots. Many people can no longer eat normal food after using the drug. Another report talked about rising cases of gallbladder disease and pancreas problems in people taking these shots.
LOSING WEIGHT, BUT ALSO LOSING OUT ON STRENGTH
The weight scale may go down — but doctors are worried about what else is going down too. Experts have warned that some people using these drugs lose a lot of muscle, not just fat. Muscle keeps you strong. When muscle disappears too fast, people feel weak, shaky, and tired. They are smaller — but not healthier.
These drugs do not fix the root causes of weight gain:
• Poor sleep
• High stress
• Gut trouble
• Hormone imbalances
• Food addiction
• Depression or trauma
At Gilead Balm, we examine these root causes from a number of different angles. Testing can reveal the chemical and hormone imbalances. Scans can show root causes of depression and sleep problems. We also provide health coaching for gut health and nutrition, as well as counseling to handle stress in a better way. Together, all of these factors make a big difference for being able to lose weight naturally and in a healthy way.
