At Gilead Balm, we approach mental health through a biblical framework — which presents humanity as both physical and spiritual in nature.
NOT ALL MENTAL SUFFERING IS SIN — SOMETIMES THE BODY IS BROKEN
One of the great abuses in Christian history has been assuming that all suffering is directly tied to personal sin. Scripture, however, clearly disagrees. When Jesus encountered a man born blind, the disciples assumed sin was the cause: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents?” (John 9:2)
Jesus rejected the assumption entirely: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned… but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” (John 9:3)
At Gilead Balm, we affirm this truth: Some mental health conditions are physical in root. Brain injury, hormonal imbalance, neurological disease, genetic disorders — these are not issues of repentance. They are issues of physical health care.
The brain is not separate from the body. It is an organ — and organs can malfunction. Struggling people are often told their suffering is ultimately “all in your head” — while the head itself is rarely examined.
BUT SIN IS STILL A CAUSE SOMETIMES
While not all suffering is the result of sin, some suffering absolutely is. Scripture repeatedly links emotional turmoil with spiritual rebellion: “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long” (Psalm 32:3). “The way of the transgressor is hard” (Proverbs 13:15).
Anxiety may come from fear of man. Depression may come from unrepentant guilt. Confusion may come from moral compromise. Rage may come from pride or bitterness. Modern counseling, however, refuses to even use the word sin — replacing it with the word “disorder”. But renaming rebellion does not heal it. Only repentance does.
“Whoever conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them finds mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13). At Gilead Balm, we don’t assume sin — but we don’t ignore it either.
We ask the questions modern counseling never dares to ask: Are your relationships broken? Are you walking in obedience? Are you harboring bitterness? Are you living in deception? Have you built your life apart from God?
THE FATAL ERROR OF MODERN COUNSELING:
EVERYTHING IS “INTERNAL”
Modern counseling teaches that mental sickness exists inside the individual. The problem is framed as internal thoughts, internal wounds, internal emotional patterns — something “all in your head.”
But Scripture never presents the human being as internally isolated. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). Yet modern counseling typically encourages a person to focus inward endlessly: feelings, self-esteem, self-care, and self-image.
Biblical counseling does the opposite. We examine:
- Relationship with God
- Relationship with spouse
- Relationship with family
- Relationship with church
- Relationship with others
Scripture says: “If you are offering your gift at the altar and remember that your brother has something against you… first be reconciled” (Matthew 5:23-24).
Internal peace does not come first. Reconciliation does. At Gilead Balm, we hold two theological truths together
- The body is real — sometimes the brain is the problem.
- Sin is real — sometimes the heart is the problem.
“Be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). This renewal is achieved through learning the truth, focusing on obedience, dedication to prayer, the importance of confession, forgiveness toward others, and submission to Christ.
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). Modern counseling may soothe emotions. But only Christ heals the soul and can set us free.
“And the God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet” (Romans 16:20). Healing is not just possible. It is promised.
